A Forbidden Friendship

Amazon has just released Good Omens, a novel written by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, that it has adapted for television. It is a tale about a forbidden friendship between an angel and a demon who has enjoyed living on earth for centuries. Michael Sheen and David Tennant were absolutely perfect for the roles of Aziraphale and Crowley.

In the Beginning

They met in the very beginning. Crowley is the snake that tempted Eve while Aziraphale guarded the east gate of the Garden of Eden with a flaming sword that he gave to Adam when they were banished.

Maintaining the Friendship

Through the ages they rescued each other, had meals/drinks together, and talked. Enjoying the earth and admiring the works of humans, they are very happy where they were.

A Bungled Mission

Crowley is tasked to replace the child of an American diplomat with the antichrist that will end the world. He delivers the baby to the convent, but the satanic nuns place the antichrist with the wrong family. Satan’s son, Adam, grows up in the small town of Tadfield with parents who love him and friends who follow him everywhere.

To Stop the End

Aziraphale and Crowley team up to prevent the end of the way of life they’ve come to love so much. At first trying to coach the antichrist not to want to destroy the world and humanity, but of course they had the wrong kid. They figure this out on the boy’s eleventh birthday, when the hell hound did not go to the ambassador’s son, but to Tadfield.

Being Human

Adam was a normal human boy. He had loving parents, a group of friends, and a glade to play in. On his eleventh birthday, he wanted a dog, but not a big and scary one like the hell hound was. He wanted a small dog that he can train and play with, which he named Dog. The savage beast from hell who was to do his bidding was turned into an adorable pup who did not live to hurt others or destroy.

Friends Save the World

In this tale, Adam’s true friends keep him from becoming evil. They kill the nightmares of men: war, pollution and famine. Aziraphale and Crowley advise him to stand against his father. Adam disowns Satan and the world that was barreling towards Armageddon was restored.

Ineffable Plan

The definition of ineffable is too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words. God’s plan is ineffable so why do lesser beings assume that they could know what it is. We assume to know that God plans there to be a war between heaven and hell, that angels and demons are supposed to be enemies, and that a human Antichrist will bring about the end of the world. But humans have free will and futures can be changed.

My Two Cents

Aziraphale and Crowley are two of the most entertaining characters ever written. Their friendship is a wonderful exploration of the freedom we humans possess. We are free to choose our friends, free to choose the side we fight for or to remain neutral. Prophecies, the world we were born in, or our peers should not tell us how to live our lives. We are free to choose peace over war, love over hate, and to savor our humanity.

I would recommend reading the book or watching the TV series to anyone who enjoys exploring faith-based questions and are not opposed to doing so with a healthy dose of humor.
